The Greek Easter is worldwide famous for its customs that create a beautiful scenery and attract people from all over the world. Every island and town of Greece becomes even more beautiful during Easter, but the following places have something really unique to offer the visitors.

Corfu

Corfu is one of the best-preserved towns in Greece with Italian architecture and an Old-Town, which is World Heritage of UNESCO. Especially in Easter, Corfu is a very popular destination due to its fascinating customs. Easter events peak on Good Friday with the Epitaph procession accompanied with philharmonic orchestras and choirs. On Easter Saturday, at 6 am, a re-enactment of the earthquake that the Gospel says followed the Resurrection of Jesus takes places at the central church, and at 11 am, at the church of St. Spyridon, the biggest and most famous church of the island, is held the First Resurrection of Jesus. Upon its completion, the bells ring joyfully, and clay pots are tossed from house balconies and windows onto the streets. On Easter Saturday night, the Resurrection is celebrated from an outdoor platform on Spianada Square, where thousands of worshippers and visitors, with musical accompaniment from the philharmonic orchestras, celebrate the most beautiful moment of Easter. The lit candles on the square and the surrounding windows create a spectacular overall setting. On Easter Sunday, the churches of the city parade the Icon of the Resurrection around the streets from 7 am.

Andros

Andros is a lovely, green Cycladic island in a very close distance to Athens, which impresses with its well-preserved towns and villages. On Good Friday, Batsi, the main town, is full of devoutness with three epitaphs meeting in the main square with the company of hymns. On Easter Sunday, the atmosphere is joyful for the Resurrection of Christ with fireworks that symbolise the celebration.

Chios

Chios, the island of mastic, is known during Greek Easter for the tradition of the local people to throw homemade firework rockets to each side of the island, creating a fantastic scenery.

Leonidion

Leonidion in Peloponnese is known for a lovely custom at the night of Holy Saturday. After the Resurrection, hundreds of homemade hot air balloons are released in the air creating a spectacular sight and lightening the sky.

Syros

Syros has one of the most impressive and best-preserved neoclassical towns in the Cyclades. What is really imposing on Good Friday is how the Orthodox as well as the Catholic Churches of the island are connected at the main square. Each church makes an epitaph and on Good Friday meets the others outside the Town Hall chanting hymns.

Meteora

Meteora is a region of almost inaccessible sandstone peaks, which monks settled on these cliffs since the 11th century. Although today only 6 monasteries operate, they form the second largest monastic community in Greece, after Mount Athos. The view from the top of the rocks is breathtaking, and the atmosphere during Greek Easter is a once in a lifetime experience.
