Greece is known around the world for its sunny summers, but in fact, it is also a top winter destination where you can ski or try other winter sports. In Greece, you can also find many beautiful towns to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere and feel that you are in a cosmopolitan city of Europe.

Athens, the capital of Greece, is the perfect place to celebrate Christmas. The municipality of Athens organises a variety of music events and happenings during December, and the city looks like a jewel, full of lights and decorated shops. Furthermore, in Athens, you can find many hotels and restaurants where the dream about an unforgettable Christmas and New Year's Eve will come true.

Thessalonikiis the second largest city in Greece and also an exquisite destination for Christmas. Aristotle Square, the main square of the city, is the centre of the celebrations where the municipality of  Thessaloniki decorates a ship instead of a tree, as part of the Greek Christmas tradition. In Thessaloniki, you can try numerous local delicacies and spend your Christmas vacations in a different way, near the sea.

Kastoria is one of the most popular winter destinations in Greece thanks to its majestic view of the lake and the unique combination of traditional and modern elements. In Christmas and New Year's Eve, you will see and hear in the streets and shops of Kastoria kids singing the local Christmas carols.

Arachova is a famous winter destination, perfect for Christmas too. Thanks to its impressive architecture, its natural beauty and its nightlife, you can spend there an unforgettable weekend during your Christmas holidays. If you are lucky and there is enough snow, you can ski or enjoy other winter sports in the Ski Centre near Arachova, at Parnassos Mountain.

Kalavrita is a traditional village in a short distance from Athens where there is also a Ski Centre at Helmos Mountain. The place is ideal for families because it offers a lot of things to do such as winter sports, hiking, exploring the rich history of the area or just drinking hot coffee in one of the cosy coffee shops.

One thing is for sure: Greece is not only a summer destination, and these places are just indicative of what you can find in Greece. According to your wishes and your expectations, there are numerous traditional villages, towns or even islands that can offer you an alternative option for your Christmas trip. You should remember that the weather in Greece is good even in December and, unless you choose a destination in high altitude, you won't feel the freezing cold of other European cities during winter.
