Top historical sites in Dodecanese

Dodecanese ● Kos ● Patmos ● Rhodes ● 08 October 2017

Aegean Sea is the cradle of Greek civilisation, the place where West meets East, and during centuries many cultures have created significant sites that reflect the culture of whole Greece. From Ancient to Roman, Medieval, Christian and Ottoman times, in Dodecanese islands, you can visit many significant historical sites that will impress you. Thus, you can have in Dodecanese a super cultural island-hopping in Greece experience, going from one island to another and exploring the rich culture and history of the area.

Asklepieion, Kos

Asklepieion is the most significant archaeological site on Kos. In the antiquity, Asklepieion was a medical centre, and it was built to honour the God of Medicine and Health, Asklepios. It was built during the 5th century B.C., and Hippokrates had taught there his students, the doctors of the antiquity.

Medieval Town, Rhodes

The Medieval Town of Rhodesis one of the most well-preserved medieval cities, and thereat, Unesco inscribed it on its World Heritage List. During the Byzantine Period, Rhodes was an important trading post between Alexandria and Istanbul. In the 7th century A.D., the Arabs captured Rhodes, and the Knights Period started in the 14th and continued until the 16th century. Walking around the Old Town of Rhodes is a unique experience of medieval beauty and multicultural character between the East and West.

The Monastery of Saint John, Patmos

Constructed on the top of a hill above Chora, the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian belongs to the most important religious centres in Greece and Europe. It looks like a fortress, but inside, you will visit a monastery, which is built on the site of an ancient temple. You can also see a Byzantine church and the museum.

Hippocrates Plane Tree and Cultural Centre, Kos

In the front of the Castle of the Knights, in the centre of Kos Town, there is a plane tree, under which, according to the myth, Hippocrates, the father of Medicine, used to teach his students. Of course, this tree is not the plane tree Hippocrates planted, since he lived in the 5th century BC, but obviously, a descendant of the original tree. Hippocrates is the symbol of Kos, and thus, a Cultural Centre in the village of Mastichari Kos is dedicated to him. Here, there is an exact replica of the ancient settlement, and many seminars of Greek philosophy are organised.

The Cave of Apocalypse, Patmos

The Cave of Apocalypse in Patmos is an important cultural monument on the island, which attracts not only Christians but also atheists, who want to feel the aura of this sacred place. The Cave of Apocalypse is an UNESCO World Heritage Site too. There, you can learn about the story of Saint John and the revelation he received from God in 95 AD.

Acropolis of Lindos, Rhodes

Above the well-preserved, traditional town of Lindos in Rhodes, rises the Acropolis of Lindos, which offers spectacular view of the Aegean Sea around it. In Acropolis of Lindos, you will see the Doric temple of Athena Lindia, the Propylaea of the Sanctuary, the Hellenistic Stoa and a Christian church as well as the Castle of the Knights, which prove that the site has a multicultural character and has incorporated various civilisations.
