Top places to swim in Lefkada

Ionian islands ● Lefkada ● 19 December 2017

When you’re traveling, part of the fun is making preparations and plans beforehand. Some people prefer to improvise, but most people agree that having a detailed plan will make for smoother sailing on your adventure, whether you’re going solo or bringing a few loved ones along. When you’re exploring the Greek islands, you’re sure to have no shortage of gorgeous, sunny beaches for you to visit. On the beautiful island of Lefkada, located on the Ionian Sea and connected to the mainland of the country by a causeway, there are plenty of places for you to visit. The traditional villages of the East Coast, stunning seaside resorts, and the waves of the South that attract windsurfers all have something unique to offer you. If you’re in the mood to go beach-hopping, here is a breakdown of the top ten Greek beaches - in no particular order! - this remarkable island features.

1. Porto Katsiki

The beach of Porto Katsiki is widely considered one of the best beaches in the Greek and Mediterranean areas, much less Lefkada Island itself. Porto Katsiki beach is 45 kilometers southwest of Lefkada’s capital city, Lefkada Town, and is a short distance away from the scenic village of Athani. Porto Katsiki beach features an array of striking white cliffs that offer a stark contrast to the deep, true blue waters of the Ionian Sea. Porto Katsiki provides rows of chaise lounges and beach umbrellas for patrons to use at their leisure. There is lush, thick vegetation surrounding the area. Porto Katsiki is frequented by tourists and locals alike, in addition to private yachts. Lined with bars and stone stairs, Porto Katsiki beach is one of the most idyllic landscapes in the Lefkada or Greek Island areas.

2. Vassiliki Beach

Vassiliki is an absolutely gorgeous fishing village on the southwest side of the island. This beach is lined with shiny pebbles instead of the soft sand you might be used to. This windy bay is the perfect spot for sailing and windsurfing, and all of the tourist accommodations on the beach and in the surrounding area fit this theme: water sports clubs, windsurfing rent centers, camping sites, taverns, and hotels.

3. Agios Nikitas Beach

The name Agios Nikitas in fact refers to a little fishing village, so this beach is not one of those sweeping commercialized beaches like the others you’ll encounter on this list. The beach that lies at the front of Agios Nikitas is much smaller than many of the others on Lefkada Island, but it has its own homey charm. The shore is lined with cliffs and rocks, and the beach itself is conveniently located next to some of the most popular fish taverns in the area.

4. Kalamitsi Beach

Sometimes referred to as Kavalikefta, this beautiful beach is located only 15 kilometers southwest of the capital, Lefkada Town. With an expanse of soft white sand set against the turquoise blue waves, Kalamitsi Beach is the perfect place to relax and catch some rays or get some exercise in the water. The shore is lined with natural rock formations that are unlike any other beach you’ll find.

5. Agiofili

The beach of Agiofili is known as one of the clearest beaches on Lefkada Island, with soft white sand and brilliant, clean water. White stone cliffs surround the shoreline, offering a feeling of isolation even though you’re sure to be one of many hundreds of visitors that block to this picturesque beach at any given time. A scenic path connects the beach to the popular village of Vassiliki, which is also accessible by a short ferry trip.

6. Egremni Beach

Located only 5 kilometers away from Porto Katsiki beach, Egremni is a long, sandy stretch of shore surrounded by tall, impressive cliffs that provide a feeling of privacy even in this public tourist attraction. Also providing long rows of chaise sunbeds and sun umbrellas, Egremni attracts thousands of visitors every year but is spacious enough not to feel too cluttered. There are bars lining the beach once you descend the famous 325 stone steps to the shore.

7. Poros Mikros Gialos

This postcard-ready beach is located 30 kilometers south of Lefkada Town and abuts the town of Poros. It is a long, sandy beach with clear skies, bright water, and soft white sands. Lined with lounge beds, umbrellas, snack bars, and taverns, Poros Mikros Gialos is not the largest beach on the island but remains one of the most popular tourist attractions. It is not lined with cliffs like many of the other Greek beaches, but a forested mountain backdrop gives this shore a unique look.

8. Kathisma Beach

Kathisma beach is a beautiful sandy shore that neighbors the popular village Agios Nikitas. Kathisma beach is one of the longest beaches on Lefkada Island, featuring fine white sands and sparkling crystal blue waters. An impressive mountain backdrop overlooks the beach, which features rows of lounge chairs and umbrellas for visitors to use. There are various shops and other accommodations close by, making this beach a top choice in particular for younger crowds who are looking for some fun and adventure, including parasailing and other water sports rather than just relaxing.

9. Mylos Beach

Mylos Beach is a gorgeous beach that offers an untouched, all-natural feel, with classic brown sands and green-blue water. Mylos is situated right in between the beaches of Agios Nikitas and Kathisma. Its wide open spaces attract plenty of tourists despite its lack of visitors’ centers and facilities. If you’re looking for somewhere to relax away from the hustle and bustle of busier, more established tourist attractions, Mylos Beach would be your top choice for shore - get it?

10. Agios Ioannis

The closest beach on the island to the bustling capital of Lefkada Town, Agios Ioannis is known for its bright golden sand as opposed to the fine, whiter sands of other beaches. This beach, like many of the beaches on Lefkada Island, is organized with plenty of lounge beds and shady umbrellas for you to relax on. Agios Ioannis is peppered with authentic windmills, making it a popular destination for windsurfing enthusiasts due to its breezy atmosphere. The beach features a few cafes, water sports centers, and shops, in addition to a charming whitewashed church, the Church of Agios Ioannis Antzousis.
