Lassithi is the fourth prefecture of Crete and is located in the eastern side of the island. The main town of Lassithi is Agios Nikolaos, but the area has many other villages and sites to offer to its visitors.

1. Agios Nikolaos

The main attraction of the town is the Sea Lake, which is connected to the sea through a channel. It is a lovely spot since many fishing boats find a shelter to this lake creating a nice scenery. Generally speaking, Agios Nikolaos is a beautiful seaside town that has kept its character, although it is a developing touristic resort. Neoclassical houses combined harmonically with modern buildings make Agios Nikolaos Crete a cosmopolitan port and an attractive town. Worth visiting is also the Archaeological Museum in Agios Nikolaos Crete.


2. Ierapetra

Ierapetra is a wonderful seaside town, located 35 km from Agios Nikolaos. It has many touristic facilities and hotels because it is a popular tourist resort. From Ierapetra, are organised many boat tours daily to the exotic island of Gaidouronissi, which is considered to have one of the best beaches in Crete. The most impressive site of the town of Ierapetra is Kales Fortress at the entrance of the port, a castle that was built by the Venetians in the 13th century. Ierapetra has also an interesting Archaeological Museum with findings from the Minoan Times.


3. Minoan site of Lato

In a close distance to Agios Nikolaos, the archaeological site of Lato is the cradle of the Minoan civilisation. In the site, you can admire the ruins of an ancient temple, an open-air theatre with capacity of 350 persons and the prytaneion.

4. Palm Forest

Vai is the only palm forest in Europe, behind a long sandy beach. It is located 25 km from Sitia, and it is one of the most impressive landscapes in Crete. The Libyan Sea creates an exotic scenery that can be found in Greece and in Europe only there.


5. Spinaloga Islet

Right opposite to the port of Elounda (Crete) and the village of Plaka, is situated a small island, which in Medieval Times was operated as a fortress to protect the fleet of Crete and the eastern side of the island from Turkish invasions. In the 20th century, Spinaloga was used as a leper colony, and nowadays, the islet is a popular tourist attraction.


6. Lassithi Plateau

The Plateau of Lassithi is a wide area of 25 square kilometres, which is highly fertile and green, with vegetables and fruit trees growing in this place. About twenty villages are located there, and they are authentic and picturesque. Many churches and monasteries are also worth visiting, but one of the most impressive things there are the thousands of windmills.
