Unexplored charming Karpathos

Dodecanese ● Karpathos ● 06 September 2017

Karpathos is a charming island that belongs to the island complex of Dodecanese. It constitutes an off-the-beaten-path choice for the travellers, who are in search of true authenticity. We discussed with many locals to suggest you the best things to see in Karpathos. Some of them are hidden gems you can discover only with this insider's travel guide!

Karpathos is ideal for exploration and discovery, especially its northern part, which is truly unique. In the southern side of the main town of Karpathos, you will find the district of Amoopi with a long and wide sandy strand that has one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. This beach is family-friendly as it offers protection from the wind.

At Apella, the setting consists of turquoise waters, pine trees and impressive rocks, while Lefkos beach provides access to the mountainous village Mesochori. There, you can admire the loveliest sunset in Karpathos as well a magnificent view of the neighbouring island of Kasos

For the lovers of adventure, Agios Minas beach is an ideal 4x4 excursion, while trekking routes begin from Diafani and end at Vrokounda, Tristomo and Avlona. All of them are nice villages inside a beautiful natural scenery. At Vanada beach, a natural freshwater stream, literally near the sea, runs here.

Near Pigadia, the main town of Karpathos, worth visiting are the village of Aperi and Achata beach. In a short distance to Aperi, you should spend some hours in the picturesque villages of Volada, Othos, Pyles and Arkasa. In these villages, don't forget to taste the famous koulouri of Karpathos, the sesame ring that costs only 0,50€!

In the small fishing village of Finiki, a great culinary experience is fresh skaros (=parrotfish), which is a renowned species of the island. Two more gastronomic secrets that Karpathos has to offer are makarounes, which is fresh pasta with creamy sheep milk cheese and caramelised onions, as well as wild goat cooked in tomato sauce and served with pasta.

A trip to Karpathos would not be complete without a visit to the mountainous village of Olympos, where time appears to have stood still for centuries. Unique architecture, a significant folklore museum and more than 70 windmills to the road leading to the village are only some of the things you will admire in Olympos.

For the lovers of Greek history and culture, the Archaeological Museum of Karpathos in Pigadia has important artefacts and is an interesting introduction to the island's history, while the archaeological sites of ancient Poseidion, Arkasa and Vroukounta will impress you.
