What to do in Athens’ coolest neighbourhood, Plaka

Athens ● Plaka ● 20 October 2017

Plaka is the most beautiful and best-preserved district in Athens. Built on the slopes of Acropolis Hill, Plaka remains under the shadow of this trademark of Athens. Neoclassical houses, bougainvilleas hanging from the windows, pebbled narrow streets, small local shops, taverns and bars create an amazing scenery to walk around, explore a large part of Athens historical centre and feel the aura of old Athens in a neighbourhood that has kept its traditional character and can make you feel like being on an island. The top thing to do around Plaka is of course visit Acropolis and Acropolis Museum, but Plaka is something more than Acropolis. Actually, Acropolis and Acropolis Museum at the pedestrian of Dionysiou Areopagitou are the gates to enter in this amazing neighbourhood with its well-kept secrets. Our suggestion is to book a hotel in Plaka in order to spend your time there, have your basis in this cool district and from there explore the whole Athens Center.

Anafiotika

Anafiotika is the most beautiful place in Plaka, if not in Athens. Anafiotika is located at the highest point of Plaka, literally under Acropolis. Small neoclassical houses, labyrinth-like paved streets, stairs leading to hidden bars and cafés and flowers all around create the perfect atmosphere to stroll around and be impressed by this romantic setting. In Anafiotika, you can just walk or eat and drink coffee or a cocktail in one of the traditional taverns, cafés and bars with young people you will meet there.

Cine Paris

Open-air cinema in Athens is a very good option during summer nights for local people as well as for tourists because the movies are not dubbed and you can watch them at their original language. Cine Paris in Plaka is considered the best open-air cinema in the world according to the New York Times. On a rooftop literally beside Acropolis, during the film, you can turn your head on the left and admire Acropolis by night, while drinking you beer and eating pop corn or souvlaki.

Byzantine Churches

In the district of Plaka, the Byzantine churches obtain an impressive aura. Under the hill of Acropolis, built near well-preserved neoclassical buildings, these churches managed to combine perfectly the ancient, medieval and neoclassical times in a scenery that looks like a painting. Agia Katerina (St Kathrin) in Farmakia Street has a spacious palm-shaded courtyard besides the remains of a Roman colonnade, and its interior since the 11th century glows with a rich collection of gold relics and priceless icons. In one of the most beautiful streets of Plaka, Tripodon Street, in the complex, which belongs to the monastery of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, is built within the precincts of an old palace Agios Nikolaos Rangava. Nearby, the little church of Agii Anagryri has a wonderful 17th century Baroque interior.

Kydathinaion Street

Kydathinaion is the main street of Plaka and its most interesting part. Neoclassical colourful houses, bougainvilleas, traditional shops with local products and taverns with seafood, meat, mezedes and ouzo create an amazing scenery for every traveller, who wants to walk in Plaka. At the end of Kydathinaion, you will meet another wonderful street, Tripodon, which leads to Monastiraki square and from where you can start your walk to Anafiotika.
