Why I'm in love with Cyclades

Anafi ● Cyclades ● Folegandros ● Koufonisi ● Kythnos ● Mykonos ● Santorini ● Sikinos ● Tinos ● 28 July 2017

Cyclades is a unique island complex, which can be loved or hated. The islands of Cyclades have extraordinary beauty and a landscape with characteristics that are special but at the same time demanding. People, who like lush greenery and trees until the coastline, find that Cyclades are too wild and dry, like a desert. But at the end of the day, this is why I and so many other, mostly young, people, like these islands so much.

When I travelled to Koufonisi, in Athens and whole Greece, the weather was rainy, and the clouds were standing threatening above our heads. In Koufonisi, the sun was shining, and the summer was there, stable and amazing. The light wind, the famous meltemi, gives the dew you want, as in Cyclades there is no shadow and no trees. Every island looks like being blessed when everything you want is just sunbathe, feel the warm sun on your face and swim in turquoise waters.

I can't imagine summer without the dry climate and the white-washed houses of Cyclades. Maybe, decades ago, without the tourism, these islands were not exactly blessed, but nowadays, they have turned their characteristics into assets tha are being appreciated by all travellers. Golden sand, crystal waters, rocky formations, tiny uninhabited islets and demanding hiking paths on the steep cliffs create the perfect scenery for those, who want something different than just trees and big, all-inclusive hotels.

The tourism in Cyclades, even on the most touristic islands, such as Mykonos and Santorini, is mild and respects the natural beauty of the landscape. The villages are traditional, the local shops elegant, and the good taste is in every corner. Bougainvilleas hanging from the colourful windows, pebbled narrow streets, which were used to protect the villages from the pirates, and romantic bars by the sea are the ultimate picture of summer, of the best summers in my life.

Furthermore, the neolithic Cycladic civilisation reflects, in my opinion, the characteristics of minimalism and simplicity that can be found everywhere in Cyclades. These islands were the beginning of the great Greek antiquity, the cradle of western civilisation.

Cyclades have everything. Islands with vivid nightlife, such as Mykonos and Paros, romantic islands, such as Santorini and Folegandros, islands with stunning beaches, such as Milos and Serifos, and off-the-beaten-path small islands, such as Anafi and Koufonisi. If you like the landscape that includes only sea, sun and white houses and chapels, then Cyclades are your place, where you can forget everything and get lost in their magical world.
