5 "Must Visit" Greek Old Towns

You know Athens, surely you have heard of Mykonos, Santorini and Crete, but did you know that Greece has some of the most beautiful old, picturesque old towns, hidden in the mainland, Peloponnese, in the north and on the Greek Islands? Here is a list of some of the 5 Must Visit Greek Old Towns you need to see once in your life!

The Old Town of Kavala

Gorgeous architecture inspired by a unique blend of Greek, Othoman, Italian influences, buildings standing on a hill over the port, washed in vibrant colours, small streets with panoramic view over the new city and the sea. The old town of Kavala is a destination on its own, it is beautiful, unique, inspiring and alive. Thanks to the universities that the town has, young people fill the nice cafes in the old town and on the promenade giving the feeling that this town is alive, and modern.
You can get to Kavala either by a short drive from Thessaloniki where the airport Macedonia is, or fly direct to Kavala airport. 

Top Tip: From Kavala you can get to Thasos Island and Samothraki, two unspoiled Greek Islands with amazing green nature and crystal clear blue waters.


The Old Town of Nafplio

Nested under a gorgeous castle the old town of Nafplio is a wonderful destination, and a must do road trip if you have some extra days during your trip to Athens. Nafplio is situated in the north Peloponnese and was the first capital of Greece after the Greek national revolution against the Othoman Empire that kept Greece under a severe occupancy that lasted for 4 centuries. Nafplio old town has some amazing buildings of classic and artistic architecture and is located just a few steps from the port and the beautiful promenade. Discover the hidden little cafes and traditional restaurants, walk along the alleys and the narrow streets, walk to the castle with the 999 steps, enjoy the wonderful sunset in the Aegean Sea.
Nafplio is just 1 hour drive from Athens and it is ideal for a short day trip away from the city.

The Old Town of Rethimno

Rethimno is situated in the north of the region of Rethimno and you can get here after a short drive from Chania- it is 60Km from Chania. The old town of Rethimno is very beautiful and it can be quite busy during the summer peak season.
Vernardos Street is wonderful with its vibrant colourful old buildings; most of them have turned into small hotels and traditional taverns serving delicious meals you can't miss. Visit Fortetzza, the Venetian fort and the Venetian Lotzia that has turned into the Public Library of Rethimno.
The beach is right at the end of the old town and needless to say that from here you can explore the unique natural beauty of Crete. 

The Old Town of Rhodes

The old town of Rhodes is one of its kind in Europe and one of the most important in the world! It is a world heritage site of UNESCO since 1988 and every year thousands of tourists are traveling to Rhodes to admire its amazing glory and unquestionable beauty! The town has never been deserted or abandoned throughout the past centuries. Walk around and explore this medieval gem and you will feel as if time has stopped. You will find many shops, restaurants, traditional taverns, market, hotels and cafes in the old city that is great during the day and at night.
Rhodes is a destination you can visit all year around. The new town of Rhodes has many hotels that stay open in the winter, too. You can reach to Rhodes by airplane or by ferry from Peiraias port.

Top TIp: Rhodes is an excellent base if you want to do some Greek Island hopping around the small islands of Dodecanese complex such as Symi, Lipsi, Patmos, Chalki.

The Old Town of Xanthi

The old town of Xanti is definitely one of the most interesting and beautiful old towns in Greece. Xanthi used to be one of the biggest tobacco centre in Europe that is why many merchants from around the world built their house here in the past centuries. All those wonderful, big mansions were built where today lies the old town of Xanthi, a wonderful residential area with some small trendy cafes and bars that you will adore! 
Xanthi is situated in the north part of Greece, just two hours drive from Thessaloniki. It is a great place to visit all year round thanks to its unique mountains, dramatic landscapes, ski resorts and wonderful beaches that are close by. 
Oh, and don't forget the National Park of East Macedonia and Thrace, a perfect place to visit either alone, with group of friends or family with kids!
