Best way to get from Athens to Santorini

Athens ● Santorini ● 18 January 2018

Are you wondering how to go from Athens to Santorini? If you want to combine your vacation in Athens with a few days on the renowned volcanic island or you come by aeroplane to Athens and then you travel directly to Santorini, there are several options that have advantages as well as disadvantages except from one choice that has only advantages: Greek Island Pass!

By boat

All boats and ferries to Santorini depart from Piraeus, the largest port of Athens that is located 15 km (about half an hour by train or taxi) from Athens centre and 50 km from Athens airport. Because all boats to the Greek islands and especially to Santorini, which is located far away, depart early in the morning, it is suggested that you spend the night in Piraeus, where there are several hotels for every taste. Otherwise, if you want to spend the night in Athens, be sure you have plenty of time the next day because in the mornings -when all boats and ferries depart- the traffic jam in Piraeus is so heavy that it is possible you need one hour to cover distance of 2 km.

The boat from Piraeus to Santorini needs about 8 hours, but it is the safest option if you suffer from nausea or you want to be sure that no cancellation will ruin your holidays. Cancellations can occur quite often due to the strong winds in the Aegean Sea during August, but large boats usually are not affected by that.

By ferry

By ferry, you can get from Piraeus to Santorini in about 4 hours, but you have to book your tickets early in order to avoid overbooking. Another problem with ferries is their price, which is expensive especially during the high season. At this point, Greek Island Pass can literally offer you the ultimate solution both to overbooking and expensive prices. You buy the Greek Island Pass paying only the price of one route, but you can make several routes to many Greek islands. Thus, you have the possibility of Greek Island Hopping from Santorini to other famous islands, such as Mykonos, Paros, Ios, Naxos and Crete. Plus, -and that is a great asset of this pass- you can do the routes anytime you want. Forget the strict schedules, the stress to catch the ferry and the necessity for early booking, even many months ago. With Greek island Pass, you have the flexibility everyone wants during the summer holidays.

By aeroplane

From Athens, you can travel to Santorini by aeroplane with many airlines. The flight lasts less than 45 minutes. Athens airport is located 35 km (45 minutes by subway) from Athens centre. However, the air-tickets during the high season can be really expensive, even if you book them very early.
