Full moon in Athens: the best spots to watch it

The full moon of August is the most beautiful, brightest and most impressive full moon in the year. In Greece, there is a tradition that the full moon is celebrated in its whole glory by the sea or in the open-air archaeological sites. Cultural events, live concerts and guided tours are only some of the things you can enjoy at this special night, which this year is on 7th August. Beach bars stay open until late, and everybody is on the beach, in gardens, on mountains and cliffs to enjoy this wonderful natural phenomenon, one of the best the summer can offer. In Athens, the archaeological sites stay open until late at night, have no entrance-ticket and organise cultural events, mainly live concerts with classical or jazz music.

An amazing archaeological site by the sea to watch the full moon is the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio. Being surrounded by sea, at the edge of the cape, the temple is a stunning location to admire the full moon mirroring on the waters of the Aegean Sea. Under the cliff, there is a nice hotel, where you can drink cocktails, eat or spend the night watching the full moon right in front of you.

The Temple of Artemis in Vravrona is also a very beautiful ancient temple half an hour from Athens Center, where you can feel the romantic atmosphere of full moon near the sacred ruins. The scenery will make you forget being in a large city, and you will have the feeling of watching the full moon in the nature of an island.

The National Archaeological Museum organises every August concerts and guided tours inside the museum, which stays open until the midnight. The garden of the museum is a top place inside the urban scenery to feel the romanticism of that night.

Acropolis is of course a top choice and the centre of the celebrations for the full moon. You can climb on the cliff of Acropolis, but there is always the possibility that you spend your night under the cliff, in Acropolis Museum, which also stays open and free until late. Generally, the walk from Acropolis to Thiseio and Plaka on the pedestrian of Dionysiou Areopagitou is a must.

Technopolis, the industrial area in Gkazi, which has been turned into a wonderful open-air space with a museum, courtyard and a stage for live concerts, is also an alternative option for your full moon night, while Keramikos Archealogical site, which is located nearby, is an off-the-beaten-path site to spend your romantic moments away from the crowds.

The garden of the Numismatic Museum will also have concerts and cultural events, and it is a beautiful place in Athens Center to enjoy this special night with your other half or your friends.
