How to eat economically in Athens

For every traveler, daily food in a restaurant is a cost that he cannot avoid. Who has the space, the kitchen and the time needed to cook, when he stays in a hotel and wants to visit all the great places of interest in only a few days?

In Athens this problem is solved. The food in restaurants is much cheaper than in other European cities, but the tourist has also other options to eat economically, avoid going out of budget and spending his money in other activities.

The first thing you have to keep in mind is that every meal in Athens is cheap but at the same time tasteful. For breakfast you can eat the famous koulouri, the sesame bread which costs only 0,50€ and is sold on almost every street corner in downtown Athens. Many vendors sell together with koulouri small portions of yellow or white cheese, which makes this breakfast more nutritious so that you can start your day with energy. In Monastiraki you can find also many small shops that sell fresh juices prepared just for you with every fruit or vegetable you want for only 2 or 3€.

Lunch in Athens is an experience you can have whenever you want, even until late at night, because restaurants are open and serve food nonstop till midnight. In tavernas, the small traditional restaurants that offer Greek food and mezedes, the price per person is maximum 15-20€ and the water is free everywhere. But if you don’t want to eat in a restaurant, you can enjoy a street food meal. The most famous product in this category is of course souvlaki, but you can find downtown many street food places with sushi, pizza and pasta. If you want something even cheaper and faster, ideal for you are the bakeries, which offer pies to go with many ingredients such as cheese, meat and spinach.

Because lunch is served until late, there is no practical difference from dinner. However, a lot of venues are open all night long or even 24/7, so that dinner gets another meaning, namely eating really late at night when you have had a bit to drink. This kind of food in Greece is called vromiko, consists of hot dogs and sandwiches, is served from food trucks until the early hours and costs maximum 5€.

Constructively, Athens is a culinary paradise, where you can feast on delicious meals that cost almost nothing and will make your day so that you will remember them back home with reminiscent mood.
