Sports and adventure in every corner of Greece

Greece ● 26 July 2017

Greece is the ultimate destination for those, who seek adventure and want to do all kinds of sports. What makes Greece ideal for these activities all year round? Its mild climate even during the winter, its coastline, which is one of the longest in the world, the calm waters of Greek islands and mainland Greece, as well as the combination of high mountains and amazing sea in a close distance to each other.

Water sports

Greece is the place to be if you are a fan of sea sports. Sail through the Aegean Islands, Sporades and Ionian Islands, feel the wind on your face and discover private beaches with emerald waters and golden sand. In the Cyclades, you can go a step further and check your strength and abilities in sailing, while Saronic Islands and Ionian Sea are ideal for beginners because they don't have strong winds. By sailing, you can do the ultimate Greek Island Hopping going by your boat from one island to another and enjoy untouched beaches that are inaccessible by car or on foot.

If you like wind- and kite-surfing, the Cyclades with their north wind, meltemi, are the perfect destination. Some spots, like the distance between Paros and Antiparos, or the beach Mikri Vigla Naxos are famous worldwide, and there, are organised international competitions in these sports, where you can take part.

Your next adventure in the seas of Greece can be scuba diving. Underwater caves, wrecks, reefs and rays are waiting for you to explore the wonders of the seabed. Zakynthos, Santorini, Corfu and Crete are top destinations for scuba diving.

Mountain sports

Another side of Greece's natural beauty are the mountains with their lofty peaks, vertical cliffs, impressive gorges, rivers, lakes and forests. Your trekking options are endless. On Crete, you can hike the longest gorge in Europe, Samaria, while the mountain of Gods, Olympus, is the ideal place for climbing. Even large cities, such as Athens, have beautiful mountains (like Imittos and Parnitha in Athens), where you can mountain bike or hike in stunning routes. Zagorochoria in Epirus, Meteora, Karpenision or Pilion Volos are only some of the places you can visit to enjoy the mountainous beauty of Greece. Impressive is also the fact that you can hike also on the Greek islands. Kalymnos has a renowned climbing festival as it is characterised by the wild rocky mountains, which are ideal for climbing.

If winter and its sports are your thing, then you should know that Greece, can give you new pleasures every season in its ski centres, in Arachova, Kalavrita, Pilion Volos, Kaimaktsalan, Seli and 3-5 Pigadia in northern Greece in a short distance to Thessaloniki as well as in Karpenision. These ski centres have interesting slopes and can be combined with a weekend in the nearby beautiful traditional towns.

Extreme sports

In Greece, you can also try extreme sports to have genuine emotional experiences. Push yourself to the limits and feel your adrenaline reaching the sky by various sports, such as bungee jumping, sky diving and off-road routes for car and bicycles. The Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos is considered to be among the most popular spots for bungee jumping worldwide, while the Cyclades and especially off-the-beaten-path islands, such as Koufonisi and Schinoussa, wich have no road network, are ideal for adventurous routes by bicycle or motorcycle.
