The best Greek islands to visit in autumn

Corfu ● Crete ● Hydra ● Santorini ● Spetses ● 28 August 2017

There are many reasons to visit Greece in the fall: good weather until November, low prices at all Greek hotels, hostels and restaurants and hospitable people, who want to show you the beauties of its destination being relaxed away from the crowds and the mass tourism of the summer. Furthermore, there are many Greek islands that are ideal for a visit in autumn since their sea is calm, they have a beautiful Chora for strolls every day long as well as natural beauty to be explored. These are 5 wonderful Greek islands to visit in autumn and discover interesting things, which are suitable for all seasons.

Spetses

Spetses is one of the most elegant Saronic Islands, all of which are perfect for a weekend from Athens thanks to their closeness to the Greek capital.  Spetses is considered to be the counterweight to Mykonos, concerning the nightlife, the luxury shops and restaurants and the cosmopolitan character. The old port and Dapia (the modern port0) are the perfect places to have a walk on foot or by a carriage with a horse. The scenery is lovely, the neoclassical houses are impressive, well-preserved and beautiful. Taverns by the sea in front of the pedestrian give you the ultimate feeling of the island, but the old port is not always calm and peaceful. In the old port, beats the heart of Spetses nightlife, and you can have fun there, in the cozy small bars until the dawn even in the fall. Plus, in September, the great event of Armata, one of the best events on the Greek islands, makes Spetses the ultimate place to be.

Hydra

Hydra belongs also to the Saronic Islands, located only 1,5 hour from Athens. The picturesque architecture of Hydra Chora, with the huge stone-built mansions and the elegant houses of the traditional and protected settlement, which looks like being hidden in its natural harbour, make you feel like seeing a wonderful painting. The houses are standing amphitheatrically on the cliff, and the harbour is full of lovely sailing boats, local shops, restaurants by the sea and bars with cosmopolitan character. This little oasis is ideal for having a stroll inside its paved streets, buy elegant things and souvenirs, eat seafood, drink your cocktail and generally relax.

Hydra

Corfu

Corfu Town is among the most beautiful and elegant cities in Greece, if not in Europe. Its traditional, Italian architecture, the neoclassical buildings and the well-preserved palaces give to Corfu Town a unique charm you will adore. The best spots in Corfu Town are the Spianada Square (Corfu), the Ionian Academy, the Town Hall and the Ionian Parliament. Corfu is one of the most popular Easter destinations, but in the fall, it is also a great place to walk around and enjoy the melancholic atmosphere.

Crete

Crete is an island for all seasons due to the many things it offers to its visitors. Significant archaeological sites, delicious cuisine and traditional seaside and mountainous villages can make your visit in Crete very interesting even if you don't want to swim in the sea. However, the location of Crete in the southern side of Greece as well as the fact that many Cretan beaches overlook the Libyan Sea between Greece and Egypt make the temperature of the sea high enough to swim until November.

Santorini

Whitewashed houses, the impressive caldera, the magnificent view of the volcano and the romantic character of its villages. These are the characteristics of Santorini that you can definitely enjoy even in the fall. Prices are significantly lower than during summer, many hotels in Santorini offer exclusive accommodation deals, and generally things are calm and charming after the high season with thousands of tourists walking around the narrow pebbled streets of Oia and Fira Santorini.
