The captivating world of sweet Greek wines

The Greek sunshine and the unique landscapes create amazing native varieties of sweet wines. These dessert wines have as vital components the blessed terroirs of the Greek earth, the sunshine and the various soil types, so that they differ from one another in character and style. Their colours range from golden yellow to deep amber, while their flavours include various notes achieved through long ageing.

Vinsanto of Santorini has dark colour, although it is made with the same blend of white varieties that are used to create the dry wines of the island, such as Assyrtiko and Athiri. The grapes used for Vinsanto are picked when they are ripe and left to dry under the hot sun for 15 days. They are then vinified and aged in oak barrels for 2-3 years at least. The combination of acidity and sweetness make Vinsanto unique.

Wine of Santorini

In the region of Heraklion in Crete, there is an area surrounding Dafnes, which since the antiquity is the most important wine-making districts in Greece. Malvasia wine was produced there. The area's climate and terrain make an ideal terroir for Liatiko grape variety, which name is a reference that the variety ripens in July. These wines feature a dark, caramel colour and are produced in many styles, such as sweet, sweet natural and sweet sun-dried. Liatiko grapes are also used in the wine-making process in Sitia. The Roman politician Lucullus, whose named is combined with gastronomy and the Lucullan feast, sourced his wine from Sitia. Sitia's PDO sweet wines have high sugar concentration and stand out for their aromas and flavours, which are wild and warm, like the slopes of the vineyards, which face the Libyan Sea.

The vineyards of Samos cover 1,600 hectares on the island. They are located in mountainous regions leading to slow ripening process, which allows the grapes to reach high sugar levels. Samos is renowned since the antiquity for its aromatic sweet wines, such as the Muscat White, which is ideal for after-dinner selections. Other islands produce also Muscat wines. The wine of Rhodes has rich, fruity flavour, while Kefalonia's Muscats has a honey-like character.

In Kefalonia as well as in Patras, is produced Mavrodaphne, the most famous sweet wine in Greece with its smooth texture and its bouquet of dried fruits, flowers and nuts.

Greek wine

A Greek sweet wine is the perfect way to finish dinner. The sweeter the wine, the sweeter the accompanying dish, such as spoon sweets or syrup desserts. Another rule is that the colour of the wine determines the colour of the dessert. Dark wines are perfectly combined with chocolate and walnut cakes, while white wines with lemon pies or sweets with cream and fruits.
