Top reasons to visit Crete

Balos ● Chania ● Elafonisi ● Falasarna ● Heraklion ● Malia ● Rethymno ● Sfakia Chania ● 28 July 2017

Crete is an inexhaustible island with endless splendours and so many things to see and do!

Chania would make the best destination on this magnificent island for first-timers. Elafonisi is a remarkable beach for you to swim and relax, with its blue waters and white sand the idyllic scenery will take your breath away. At the west side of Chania, you will discover the amazing beach Seitan Limani, one of the best paradises that Crete can offer. The colour of the water is so exotic, you will definitely want to spend your whole day in there…

If you can afford a day-trip, then rent a boat and visit Gramvousa and Balos. Those picturesque landscapes are decorating the pages of some of the best travel guides in the world.  The incredibly beautiful setting (all over the island) will make you stare in awe. Undoubtedly, these are the reasons that will make you agree that Greece has some of the most astonishing tourist attractions around the globe!

Go for a dip to Falasarna Beach. After your fabulous day by the sea search for a local tavern to try delicacies such as “kolokythoanthos” and fresh fish from the local area.

Another choice is Sitia, not such a popular destination among foreign tourists, but one that surely can get your attention. You can take your swim at Erimoupoli (or Ermoupoli) where the landscape is wild but at the same time accessible. Its crystal-clear water will amaze you. Next stop, the Palm Forest of Vai, one of the most popular and exotic destinations in Crete. If you want to see the most magnetising view, then you have to go to “Paratiritirio” (Observatory). Climb across the rocks and admire the view from above, it is worth it.

Wander in the alleys of Rethymnon, and then enjoy the most beautiful sunset under the Fortezza Fortress. At the village Loutra you will have the most delicious roasted meat, traditionally baked in the wooden oven. You should try dishes like “dolmadakia”, “fava” and the homemade pies. Do ask the locals for more information and suggestions! If you are into something sweet you must taste the old-time favourite “loukoumades” and galaktoboureko recipes!

You can also visit the island of Spinaloga. This is a very special place where the leprosy sufferers were hosted ages ago. The stone wall houses and the deserted streets will give you a sense of abandonment. Combined, they will make you feel awe and admiration, while your mind you will try to recreate the images of the life that once existed there.

The Minoan Palace of Knossos highlights one of the most sophisticated cultures in the world. People from every corner of the world come to visit, you should do exactly the same! There is also one more palace in Malia, which is the third largest in size on Crete if you find yourself there go and take a look.

At the village called Krasi you will come across the eldest plane tree on the whole island - one of the biggest in the world. Pay a visit to the traditional coffee shop and try some “raki” accompanied by delicate bites called “mezedakia” that the locals will make especially for you! If you want to try yourself the authentic experience of the Cretan cuisine, you’ve arrived at your paradise. You will adore the “skioufihta”spaggeti (a traditional Cretan recipe), and if you feel adventurous, we suggest that you try the dish called “Chochlios”. Finally, if you manage to get to Sfakia, a must-see destination among so many others, visit Anopoli and make a stop to grab a bite at the traditional bakeries around the area. Don’t forget to buy some “paximadia” (rusks) for the road!
